Rachel watched with admiration as Petey swung the truck and rig into place. Dory, already bored, meandered down to the swing at the end of the lot. In no time at all it seemed like Petey had the jack stands down and was unhitching the truck. Even under the flannel shirt Rachel could see the sculpted muscles move effortlessly. In a well choreographed sequence, Petey moved with confident grace. She stopped for a moment, to assess her next move when she turned and called over to Rachel. "I’ll need you open up the trailer in a few minutes. I want to make sure that it is nice and level before I let the slides out." Petey explained as she hooked up the electrical power cord to the utility pole assigned to the lot. Rachel pulled the trailer keys out of her pocket. They still had the dealer's paper ID model number attached. She unlocked the door and pulled out the swing-away steps so that Petey could get into the trailer. Petey stepped up and into the stabilized rig. She whipped out a small, pocket-sized level from a cargo pocket and set it on the floor, the stove, the countertop and the dinette table, checking the reading carefully before moving to the next step of set-up. Petey hit the main power switch and with a quiet hum, the living room/dining room extended, adding another three feet of living area to the trailer. She turned to Rachel, who was peeking in through the door, and gave the thumbs up sign and moved on to the sleeping area to repeat the same procedure again. Just a few minutes had passed when Petey reappeared with a very disarming smile. "Well, she's all ready. Water is hooked up, electric and now all I have to do is turn on the propane tanks and you will have cooking fuel and heat.” Petey hesitated as she looked over the contents of the trailer and gave a very low whistle. Every item still had the price tag on it. From the sleeping bags to the Coleman lanterns still in their boxes. "This really is your first time." Petey said knowingly. Rachel looked around at the same things and blushed. "Yeah, well there was this sale...." Rachel began "and...ahhh....who could resist 25 percent off?" she offered lamely. Petey eyed her carefully and stepped back out of the trailer. "Sure must've been one helluva sale!" the blonde exclaimed. "Yeah," Rachel said softly, almost to herself. "A once in a lifetime sale" Petey handed back the truck keys, her hand lightly brushed Rachel's palm. The touch was brief, yet the sensation lingered as Rachel held the keys absently. Flustered, tired and not knowing what to do, Rachel looked around for Dory who was still sitting on the swing looking out at the river. Rachel called down to her partner "Petey's got us all set up Dory.” The younger woman merely waved up to the two of them and continued swinging. Rachel turned to Pete and smiled awkwardly. "I guess she'll be up in a while." "Look, if you need anything Rachel, just let Nell or Jesse know and if I can help you out, I will" Pete kindly offered as she climbed back into her truck. "Thanks, you been a great help already, I can tell you right now I would have been pouring over the manuals until tomorrow morning to accomplish what you did in few hours." Rachel acknowledged honestly. "Enjoy your stay" Petey said as she revved up the engine and put the truck in gear. With a final salute and a sexy little half smile the blonde turned the F-250 and headed down the road. Rachel watched as the truck disappeared around the bend. "So, she finally left huh" Dory said startling Rachel who was watching the taillights disappear off into the growing dusk of the evening. "You could have come up and thanked her for her help" Rachel admonished Dory. "News flash Rach...It's....her....job!" Dory said sarcastically. Rachel narrowed her eyes and shot Dory a look of disbelief and then shook her head. "You know sometimes Dory; you can be such a snob." "So what are we going to do now that we are finally here in this god-forsaken place?" Dory whined as she looked around. "There is no place to go out to eat, no malls, no shopping, no movies... I’m hungry, I’m tired …and this is not my idea of a vacation." "Yeah, well although you spend our money like Paris Hilton, you are not PH ! And as far as what is next, it is called unpacking" Rachel said a little unsympathetically as she guided the younger woman toward the waiting trailer. Dory stomped her way into the camper while Rachel looked down at the keys in her hand; she could still feel the sensation of Petey’s touch on her palm. “Rachel?” she asked herself. “What in the hell are you doing here……?” Click on the River To Continue To Chapter 4 © Labinky Park 2008 All Rights Reserved |
