Petey was tired when she finally unlocked the door to her camper. All she wanted was a hot shower and to hit the bed. In no time she had the shower done; she slipped into an over sized tee and pulled back the covers to her bed. She set the alarm clock to give herself a good four hour nap and settled in to some well deserved dreams. As she lay there, stretched out and comfortable she let her mind drift. So much had happened in the last twenty-four hours that she had not had a minute to think. Her mind tumbled over an array of subjects and half formed thoughts; flitting much like a butterfly from one thought to another. Musing on this thought; tucking that one away for later contemplation, until her mind finally rested on one word. Rachel! That one thought was like an infusion of color in a dark room. It illuminated all lesser thoughts to other parts of Petey’s mind. With a smile on her face, Petey drifted off to sleep. ******************************************************************************************* Rita drove Sara back to their camper in their golf cart. Sara had forgone any of her pain medication for the last 24 hours and it showed. Sara’s face was pale, her lips colorless and her body was trembling. Rita could tell she was in tremendous pain. Rita drove as quickly as she could, going over the speed bumps as carefully as possible as she watched Sara wince in agony. “We’re almost there honey…” Rita reassured Sara. “I know….I know…” Sara smiled in spite of the pain. “Sara…you should have taken your meds…I hate to see you hurt so much!” Rita bit her lip. “Rita…I needed a clear mind…especially in dealing with James…he needed to hear that I was lucid and not under the influence…I’ll be fine when we get to the camper.” Sara sighed in relief as she spied their camper not far away. Rita helped Sara out of the golf cart and up the steps of the deck and then into the camper. Sara went to the soft-sided carry on that was filled with medical supplies. Then she went to the bedroom and sat on side of the bed. She withdrew five syringes. Two were to flush the pic line that was in her right upper arm; due to the disease process, most of her veins had collapsed so a pic line was inserted into a large vein in the right arm in order to give medication and to retrieve blood samples. The third syringe was cancer cocktail for pain and then two more syringes to flush the line again once the medication was in. Sara and Rita knew this ritual well. Sara took the alcohol swaps and carefully wiped the ports and took the heparin/saline flush syringe and flushed the medication port. She repeated the same procedure for the blood port. She disposed of the unused needles and empty syringes in a portable sharps disposal chamber. Then she lay down on the bed and took the cocktail syringe screwed it on and began to gently push on the plunger. Soon her body felt warm, it was then that Rita took over, pushing in the medication slowly…too much too fast could be fatal…slow and easy was the way. The effect on Sara was almost immediate, her body relaxed, color came back to her face and lips. Gently Rita unscrewed the empty syringe and repeated the alcohol swabbing, and flushing the port with saline. Rita counted Sara’s breaths, to make sure that they were not labored or ragged. But they were slow and easy. Sara’s eyes fluttered for a few moments and then she let herself go with the medication. Rita finished cleaning up the syringes; disposed of the needles, repacked the supplies in the med bag they jokingly called it. She carefully set out a syringe of Nar Can on her side of the bed, if Sara’s breathing decreased, or it seemed ragged, she was to push the medication in the med port immediately. Then Rita stretched out beside Sara, put her arm under Sara's head and pulled up a spread to cover them both and placed her hand on Sara’s chest. This was the closest Sara got to being pain free. Rita softly kissed the side of Sara’s face and gently held her as she floated pain free.
