The door opened to Dr. Steven’s office as Lynn Knight entered with two steaming cups of coffee. She was dressed in a low-cut ice blue blouse; a very short and form fitting skirt that had a slight slit in the front. She offered the coffee to her colleague. Dr. Stevens took the coffee and looked over his half glasses in an almost amused way. “I wanted to see you before you had your interview with my patient…” Lynn almost purred. “Now which patient would that be Lynn?” Dr. Stevens smiled as he took a sip from the Styrofoam cup. “Jesse Martin. I had her brought in yesterday….I have it all in my notes…” Lynn waved her hand nonchalantly. “Jesse Martin….ummmm….your notes were interesting….very in-depth….in fact…. your notes for the admission….took ten pages...” “You know me James….I… am always….thorough.” Lynn flirted unabashed. “Interesting…..very interesting case…” Stevens nodded toward the chart. “I knew you’d agreed with me James….but then you always do…” Lynn reached out for the chart but Doctor Stevens kept his hand on it. “What I find interesting is that I got a call from an old colleague….I had worked with this therapist for over twenty years….she retired just before you got here….she has been battling cancer….I don't believe you ever met Sara...” Stevens looked at the chart then back at Lynn. “If it would have been anyone else that would have called me….I would not have given it a second thought….I would have concurred with your observed assessments….and we would have worked on a treatment plan for your…. patient.” “What does a call from this Sara have to do with my patient?” Lynn sat back in her chair and her skirt hiked up a little more. “I interviewed your patient already this morning….in fact I have discharged her….” Dr Stevens watched very carefully the full affect of his words on Lynn. “Discharged…” Lynn almost choked on the word. “I thought you didn’t start interviewing the patients from admission until nine am?” Lynn said incredulously. “Normally….but I like I said…I had this very interesting conversation with a former colleague who has….shall we say…a vested interested in this particular case…..so I decided that I needed to change my rather predictable habits….change is good for everyone…and I conducted the interview with your patient relying on your notes….and her input….and after balancing out….the facts….the patients demeanor….her own words and affect….I discharged her….” “Didn’t you read my admission notes at all?” Lynn demanded. “The patient was in a deep psychotic break…she has not said a word…or looked at anyone since she was admitted.” Lynn sputtered in defense of her notes. “You are right…she did not say a word…until she got into this room….and she answered the questions before I could even ask them….”Dr. Stevens reminisced at the encounter with Jesse. “She articulated very well in here….her affect was normal…she stated more than once that she had no thoughts of hurting herself or anyone else…she is an engaging woman. Is that what you find so attractive Lynn?” The question came so smoothly, so quietly and so gently that Lynn had not seen it coming. She quickly averted her eyes. Dr. Stevens noted the almost imperceptible trembling of her hand as it held the cup of coffee. “Don’t be ridiculous James…she is a trouble woman…I am her therapist…I am looking out for what is best for her!” Lynn quickly rationalized. Dr. Stevens set down his coffee cup and handed Lynn the chart. “Then I suggest…that you read my notes….and continue with your own discharge plans. The patient is stable, happy and the court stipulations for her case have been met. Do we understand each other Lynn?” “Why of course James…I will read your recommendations and your assessment. Thank you for taking such an interest in my patient.” Lynn said with a cold smile as she took the chart and walked out of the office. Lynn had a smile pasted on her face as she headed out through the unit. It wasn’t until she got to her car and she was inside that she let go. “Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!” she banged her hands against the steering wheel of her Lexus. She jammed her key into the ignition and threw the gearshift in reverse and gunned the engine. She had parked close to the hospital entrance and not the reserved parking lot because she was running late this morning. As she pulled out of her parking spot, a horn blared and she slammed on her brakes. When she looked into the rear view mirror, she saw Petey’s smiling face waving a finger at her. Lynn jammed the gearshift and pulled back into her slot. The therapist looked out the side mirror of her vehicle and watched as Terri flipped her ‘the bird’ with a grin. Lynn could see Jesse cradled next to Terri as they passed her. “Fucking Dykes!” Lynn breathed as the car drove away.
