Jesse was unaware of the time that had passed. The door opened and two aides
pushed a wheelchair into the room. Together they walked over to Jesse, one on each
side and picked her up from the mattress and put her in the chair. One of the aides
wrapped a blanket around Jesse before they wheeled her out of the room. Jesse hung
her head quietly as the chair she sat in was pushed down a corridor. The aide knocked
on a door and entered. It was an office. One wall was filled with books and journals,
but the back wall had a mural painted on it. It was a window looking out into a cottage
garden, complete with small fish ponds, water fountains and flora arrangements. It
was beautiful and in much better shape than the mural was in the locked room. Jesse’s
eyes drank in the colors and shapes and before long; her eyes caught the signature in
the corner “D. Stone”.

“Quite a piece of work isn’t it?” the middle aged man smiled as he observed Jesse.

Jesse nodded her head as she let her eyes roam through the flower gardens and the
stone path ways.

“The artist that painted that had just one desire….to paint….she came to my office
about five years ago and said…give me a wall….I’ll give them a vision…” The man
swerved his chair around to fully face Jesse. “I know that you have not uttered a word
since you were brought in, but I think you have a lot to say. Please tell me something
so that I can let you go home to your family.” He said rather kindly.

Jesse took a deep and ragged sigh. She bit her lip and blinked her eyes. Then she
looked directly at the man in front of her. “Good….Jesse….that is very good. I am Dr.
Stevens. It is my duty to chat with you this morning and I do apologize about the hour,
but it seems that there are quite a few people waiting to see that you get safely home.
But I do need you to communicate with me. Now, I have introduced myself…why don’
t you tell me a little about yourself…” Dr. Steven’s kind and soothing voice invited.

“My name is Jesse, Dr. Stevens, but you know that…you have my chart in front of
you. I am not sure as to the real reason that I am here. I am not on any psych
medication…so that is not the issue….I haven’t had a psychotic break….I just knew
that it was safer not to say anything than to react to the situation…” Jesse lips
quivered in exhaustion.

“Then it was a defense mechanism on your part and not a break from reality?” Dr.
Stevens asked as he made notations in Jesse’s chart.

“Doctor….what would you have done in my situation?  A State Cop comes to my
office and tells me he is taking me into custody!” Jesse looked at the mural and
calmed herself again before she continued. “I am not a threat to myself or anyone
else…I am not hearing voices….I am not going off the deep end…I am not paranoid
though after this incident I might become paranoid!” Jesse straightened herself up in
the wheelchair. “I’d like my clothes back…and my normal life!”

The doctor looked over his half glasses and smiled at the indomitable force before
him. He nodded his head. “You just answered all my questions…” he chuckled. “You
happened to hit all the biggies…harm to yourself or others…hearing voices….
paranoia…..you touched on everything…except one….you are a lesbian…”

“Well doctor….not to shake your world….but just because you choose to eat
pussy…doesn’t mean you are crazy…it just means you’re enlightened! I consider
myself one of the chosen few….” Jesse sat back in her wheelchair and watched the
good doctor digest her retort.

“Then….you don’t have any issues with your lifestyle?” The doctor gently asked.

“The only
problem I have with my lifestyle is that I am treated like a second-class
citizen of this great United States. That goes for jobs, marriage…adoption….and the
list goes on. It seems that I am the only one that doesn’t have a problem with my
lifestyle….I have come to grips with being a lesbian….it doesn’t bother me a bit. In
fact…I am proud of it!” Jesse said with passionate conviction.

Dr. Steven’s nodded and smiled as he wrote a notation in the chart then he looked
back at his patient. “Jesse….I concur…you don’t need any medication….and you are
not suicidal….or a threat to anyone….or paranoid…” his eyes twinkled “at least not
without good reason…I am recommending discharge….the best medicine for you is
to go home.”

The doctor picked up his phone and murmured into the mouthpiece; and he no sooner
set the phone down than the door opened and the two aides that had escorted her in
whisked her out of the office before she could say another word.

The aides took Jesse to a cubicle and her clothes and shoes were ready for her, they
closed the curtain to give her some privacy. With a trembling hand, Jesse picked up
the ring that lay on top of her clothes; it was a purple enamel band that Terri had given
her. She pressed it to her lips and for the first time since this ordeal began her body
began to shake and the tears flowed. She slipped the ring back on her finger and
dressed as fast as she could. When she swiped back the curtain she looked at the two
aides. “Where is the fucking door outta here?”

Terri had a hawk eye on the movement by the door; she heard a buzzer on the other
side of the locked unit and the door swing out. When she saw who walked through
those doors and into the room she gave a rebel yell  had  jumped up from the recliner;
leaped over the coffee table and hurled herself toward Jesse and grabbed her in a
bear hug.

“Terri….take me home!” Jesse kept saying over and over. “Take me home!”

"Baby....hold on to me....we are going home..." Terri promised faithfully.
