Terri and Jesse sat together on a small sofa that was in the Therapist’s office.

“How are you doing today?” the well manicured, blond coiffed woman smiled warmly at the
two before her.

“I’m pretty good Lynn, how about yourself” Jesse smiled back in genuine interest.

“I am doing well and thank you for asking.” The therapist looked toward Terri and waited,
expectantly. Terri just looked back.

“So…..you both are here today….?” The therapist kept looking between both Jesse and
Terri; waiting for one or the other to speak.

“Today is Jesse’s last session.” Terri smiled.

The therapist narrowed her eyes just slightly at this bit of information. “Is this your decision
Jesse….or one made for you?” the therapist asked carefully.

Jesse smiled eagerly and looked at her therapist who had been working with her for the last
two years and nodded yes.

“I see….” Lynn adjusted herself in the leather chair that faced the two women.

"Jesse…you made some impressive breakthroughs this past year…..disrupting your
treatment right now may not be….in your best interest.”  The therapist began to reason with
her patient.

“I’m ready…” Jesse flashed her blue eyes and grabbed a hold of Terri’s hand…”We’re ready!”

“I…..see…” Lynn picked up her pen and began to write on the pad in front of her.

“So….this is discharge….right?” Terri asked abruptly.

“Not….quite.” The therapist smiled.

“You don’t understand….” Terri said in a very quiet and deliberate voice. “We are done….
today!”

“I understand that is your intention…but it is not quite the way things work when there are
probation issues….and other legalities…..” the therapist trailed off.

“Jesse has met all her requirements, including this one.” Terri straightened herself in the seat.
“We are done here! You spend an hour a week with her….and I spend a week trying to get
her back.” Terri clearly drew the line between her and the therapist.

“Is that how you feel Jesse…..” Lynn looked at Jesse. “Is that how you feel about the work
we do here together?”

Jesse’s smile quivered hesitantly. “I am a lesbian. I don’t want to be anything else. I love
women. I love Terri. I think that the “work” we do….is mostly for your benefit. I think that you
like to hear me talk about my loving women. I don’t want to be reprogrammed into a straight
heterosexual woman. I think….” Jesse took a deep breath “that the memories….are better
left…alone.”

“Most women….who have suffered the kind of abuse you have Jesse…feel that the
memories are better kept as a secret. But your mind…..your mind in spite of the situations
you were put in…found such an incredible adaptive way to survive….as painful as the
memories are….you are healing...” The therapist explained to both women.

“Then….you should not be surprised that I want to end therapy…” Jesse smiled brilliantly.

“I said you were healing….”the therapist mused.

“I know….” Jesse squeezed Terri’s hand. “I don’t want to do any more “experimental”
techniques….”

“I am going to recommend at least one more month of treatment.” The therapist smiled at
Terri.

“If that is your recommendation….then I am going to insist that Terri be present at each
session.” Jesse smiled at the therapist.

Terri could see that this was a surprise to the woman before them. Under her carefully
applied makeup Terri could see the unmistakable flush of someone caught.

“I don’t think that we can accommodate that….” The therapist adjusted herself again in the
leather chair.

“Well….according to our insurance policy that we are paying this under….a domestic partner
can be included in therapy sessions….and the beauty of it is…..we still only pay one co-pay!”
Jesse’s quipped.

“But Terri is not the reason you required my services to begin with…..” the therapist tried to
counter and regain some footing in this situation.

“Well…..since you will not discharge me today, then the rest of the secessions that we have
together…. will be with Terri present. She doesn’t have to participate; in fact, I really wouldn’t
expect her too. But I want her here.” Jesse nodded her head firmly.

“But that is not the way we do things Jesse,” the therapist tried to cajole her client.

“Lynn…maybe you need to re-frame your thinking and look at it as an……”experimental
approach”….that is what we have been doing for the last two years….right?” Jesse narrowed
her eyes knowingly at the therapist.

The therapist looked down at the paperwork in front of her and wrote a quick note and then
resumed eye contact with her client.

“We only have a few more minutes in this session Jesse……I was wondering if you could tell
me how you are sleeping?” the therapist waited for Jesse to respond.
Jesse squeezed Terri’s hard enough to cut the circulation off in her arm. “I am sleeping fine.”
She answered.

“No insomnia? Nightmares? Nocturnal wanderings?” the therapist asked as she watched
Jesse’s face.

“I sleep like a baby….in Terri’s arms.” Jesse lifted her head and smiled back at the therapist
as she gently eased up on the pressure of Terri’s hand so that the blood could resume it flow.

“Good, then there won’t be any medication adjustments this week.’ The therapist made some
more notations on the pad before her and looked up at the clock and stood up.

“I will see both the same time next week.” Lynn waited as Terri and Jesse stood up together
and walked to the door. The therapist opened the door and extended her hand to her in a
goodbye gesture and Terri looked at the hand, looked at the therapist and walked on through
the door. The therapist put her hand on Jesse’s shoulder and gently squeezed it. Jesse
nodded goodbye and followed Terri out to the ante room and toward the check-out area of
the busy practice.

Once the door to the office was closed the therapist walked over to her seat and sat down
and looked out the window. She could see Terri and Jesse walking across the grass toward
the parking area. They were hand in hand and they were laughing. The therapist could see
that the tension that Jesse had physically harnessed in her presence had dissipated.

The therapist punched the numbers into her keypad and waited for the phone to be picked up.

“911 West Virginia State Police Barracks, can I help you?” the dispatcher’s professionally
clipped voice came across the speaker phone.

“My name is Lynn
Knight and I am a therapist’s at the County Behavioral Health Unit. I have a
client who is currently unstable and I consider her to be a danger to herself and others. I
would like to have her picked up and brought to the emergency room for an emergency
involuntary admission until I can be assured that she is no longer a threat to herself or to
others………”the therapist began to explain to the dispatcher.

“We will need a name, description and location of the patient ma'am.” The dispatcher
acknowledged the information.

“Her name is Jesse Martin. I would check her work address first. It is the front office of the
Labinky Park RV office off of Route 9. She is approximately  5 ft two inches tall, brown hair
and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing blue jeans, light blue tee-shirt and white Hooded
sweatshirt.” The therapist calmly reported as she watched the car with Jesse as a passenger
drive by her clinic window and she couldn’t help herself….she smiled and waved and watched
as Jesse smiled that beautiful smile and waved back……
